DCA Celebrates Juneteenth

The City of Chattanooga Office of Multicultural Affairs will honor Juneteenth by hosting a month-long recognition celebrating Black-owned businesses called “Chattanooga Recreates Black Wall Street.”

The event title is a historical reference to the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a once flourishing African-American community before it was attacked by white residents in 1921.

Free, socially distanced activities will occur on Saturday, June 19, at Miller Plaza Waterhouse Pavilion. This will be an educational opportunity where attendees can see a display of historical photos from the Black Wall Street, view photos of Chattanooga’s early Black businesses, learn about business resources, and watch the PBS documentary film “Boss: The Black Business Experience.”

DCA will collaborate with OMA to celebrate the occasion by displaying flags along Market Street and in front of Downtown Black-owned businesses.

Free parking will be available at City Hall parking lot B, located at E. 10th Street between Lindsay and Houston Streets.

Local food vendor BBQ Rowe will have signature food items for purchase and limited free samples. Additionally, a limited number of free, event-related t-shirts and hats will be available. Learn more at the event posting on Facebook.
